Chapter 13

“Becky, have you seen that amethyst broach I wore to church last week? I was sure I left it on my shawl,” Polly Esther called up the stairs of the boarding house.

“Did you put it in your jewelry box?”

“I don’t think so. I just thought it would look nice with my lavender dress.” Polly shook her head, turning back toward the kitchen where delicious smells drifted from the cook stove. “I don’t know what I was thinking, inviting that Farrow woman and her daughter to dinner tonight,” she continued, hearing Rebecca Brady making her way down the hall.

“You were being kind, Polly,” Becky said, her soft blue eyes full of understanding.

“I just thought she must be lonely,” Polly agreed. “She’s had quite a change in her life and even with working at the Mill, I don’t think she’s made any real friends.”

Rebecca smiled. “It will be nice having a table full of folks,” she teased, understanding that Polly missed her family when the boarding house was slow.

“Maybe we should have invited Maud and Harlan as well,” Polly mused.

“I’m sure they have enough to do right now, getting ready for a double wedding.”

“Polly!” George’s voice echoed through the back door before it had even been opened, “Polly!” He called again, stepping into the room.

“What is it, George?” Polly turned a wooden spoon in her hand, a hint of worry around her eyes.

“We’re having comp’ny,” George said. “Sorry to spring it on ya like this, but it just sorta’ happened.”

Polly’s brows furrowed. “You mean Mrs. Farrow and her daughter?”

“No, Willem Druthers with his niece and nephew,” George replied, his heavy gray brows rising toward his hair line.

“Druthers? But I invited Mrs. Farrow,” Polly said.

“What can I do to help?” George asked. “It ain’t like you’ll need more food, is it?”

Polly scowled at her husband, then smiled as he wrapped an arm around her waist and kissed her on the cheek.

“I’m sure there will be plenty,” Becky chimed, in suppressing a laugh. “Even with me and Grady, we’ve got enough to feed an army.”

“Did Mr. Meeks say he’d be joining us tonight as well?” George asked. “I can run over to the Mill and get an extra pie, if you need me to.”

Polly Esther Olson swatted George affectionately with her spoon. “You just want to see what Rupert has new to try, George Olson,” she grumbled. “But since you invited those youngsters, you’d better go fetch an extra dessert.” She smiled, shooing him away.

“I’ll be back in a jiffy,” George said, looking to see that Rebecca wasn’t around as he swatted at Polly’s skirt and dashed out the door before she could yelp.

“Mother stop griping. You accepted the invitation and Tate was kind enough to give us the evening off. With the diggers gone, evenings are a little slower, so it will be nice to get out and meet some of the neighbors in a more casual setting.”

“Lucinda, I do not intend to waste what remains of my life in this backwater town, so I see no real need to mingle with the locals.
